Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop: A punk icon at Suikerrock on Friday!

There's a reason why many consider Iggy Pop the godfather of punk - every single punk band of the past and present has either knowingly or unknowingly borrowed a thing or two from him and his late -'60s/early-'70s band, The Stooges.

James Osterberg from Michigan, Illinois. Better known as ‘Iggy Pop’, the Rock Iguana. Widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time, touring concert stages around the world until he drops (after which he simply gets up again!). He pre-figured both punk and grunge even before these words ever existed and became synonyms for mohawks, safety pins, flannel shirts and torn jeans. He will be 70 in April, but that won’t stop him to personally rearrange our Main Square’s cobblestones by unleashing his mad mix of poetry, humor and punk infused rock ’n roll. A highly recommended live recipe for any music lover. Many say you should put seeing Iggy rock out on one’s “must see” list – his fans of all generations are the first to testify to that.

Iggy Pop never compromises. He still takes of his shirt on stage and still does just as he pleases. Backing him up is a richly filled box of albums written by himself and his many friends – Iggy’s collaboration with David Bowie on his first two solo albums is still regarded as one of the most epic musical alliances. With The Stooges as well as during his later solo career, he wrote so many classics like ‘I wanna be your dog’, ‘1969’, ‘Lust for life’, ‘The passenger’, ‘Real wild child’ or his most poppy song ‘Candy’ (with B-52’s Kate Pierson).

In 2010, Iggy and the Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but solo Iggy Pop is at his best. When it comes to live performance, he has yet to find his match. Remember last year’s passage at Rock Werchter, where he presented his latest album ‘Post Pop Depression’, a collaboration with Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age. The album has been recently nominated for a Grammy Award in “Best Alternative Music Album” category.

Iggy Pop, Friday July 28th, an exclusive Belgian concert at Tienen Main Square.
